Today Cat Care Society volunteer Kay Higgins escorted Nicoli to 9News Petline9 hosted by Becky Ditchfield.
Nicoli is 5.5 years old. He came to CCS when his owner died, in mid August. He is neutered, dewormed, vaccinated, and tested negative for disease, and micro chipped. A domestic shorthair brown tabby, Nicoli gets along well with the other cats in his room at Cat Care Society. He's looking for an indoor home with lots of love and a sunny spot of his own. Nicoli has been exposed briefly to children and other cats, at this time he has not met a dog. He is very affectionate and loves to petted while he rolls around on the floor.

CBSA partners with two of the State’s Economic Development Entities to Promote Colorado’s Strengths at AdvaMed 2013
Representatives from the Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA), the Colorado Springs Regional Business Alliance and the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation will showcase Colorado’s medical device and diagnostic sectors during 'AdvaMed 2013: The MedTech Conference,' September 23-25, in Washington, D.C. The announcement is made by April Giles, CBSA President and CEO, who says more than 1,000 industry experts and thought leaders will participate in over 40 educational panels and executive workshops during the event, including the following CBSA members:
“This will be the CBSA’s seventh year participating in the AdvaMed Conference and each year the potential connections and opportunity to showcase Colorado’s medical device and diagnostic industries becomes even more abundant,” said Giles. “Over the last five years Colorado technology and companies have received over $600 million in investment capital and the life science community is garnering national attraction for its continued success. We also continue to be ranked as the 6th largest medical device cluster in the nation with over 340 medical device, diagnostic and instruments companies. Colorado is positioned as a leader in this sector and this conference provides us an opportunity to promote the state.”

Colorado BioScience Association
Coverage: CBSA's Rocky Mountain Life Science Investor and Partnering Conference 2013
Quoting: "The vetted companies came from Colorado, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Montana with hopes of attracting investment to move their products – focused on cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Lyme disease, wound repair and a host of other bioscience challenges – toward commercialization and profitability.
The day-long conference kicked off with a breakfast keynote “fireside chat” featuring Kyle Lefkoff, founder of Boulder Ventures, moderating a discussion with the leaders of two of Colorado’s premier publicly traded life science companies – Patrick Mahaffy, CEO and co-founder of Clovis Oncology and Ron Squarer, CEO of Array BioPharma, who shared their views on the state of Colorado’s bioscience industry"

Quoting: "Executives of two Boulder-based biopharmaceutical companies said Thursday that early-stage pharma business in Colorado is hampered by the lack of a stable core that can be built around. Speaking at the Rocky Mountain Life Science Investor and Partnering Conference at the Ritz-Carlton, the two said they do their best in an environment that can be at once frustrating and invigorating."

Denver Off The Wagon: Oktoberfest at the Governor’s Residence
From the Denver Off The Wagon blog:
Oktoberfest at the Governor’s Residence
When: Thursday, September 26th
Where: 400 E. 8th Ave., Denver
What to expect: This event is hosted by the Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA) and Colorado Cleantech Industries Association (CCIA) so be prepared to hang out with a bunch of science nerds. Local breweries will pour beer and showcase their sustainable practices. There will also be a homebrew competition amongst the employees of CBSA and CCIA. Besides the word “Oktoberfest” in the name, it doesn’t appear this event has much in common with that famous Bavarian celebration. They still got beer, though.

Westword: 'The debate over cat declawing sharpens'
Cat Care Society's Suellen Scott is quoted in today's cover article by Alan Prendergast:
"'We strongly, strongly, strongly counsel against declawing,' says Suellen Scott, director of development for the Cat Care Society in Lakewood. Like many feline shelters, CCS has had cats that were adopted years earlier returned because of behavior problems after being declawed...
...Yet the percentage of declawed cats found among shelter populations seems to vary widely. Scott of the Cat Care Society reports that her shelter currently has sixty cats awaiting adoption. Ten are declawed cats. Most of them were returned eight years or more after they were first adopted. Six of them were returned specifically because of failure to use the litter box."

Note: The Denver Film Society will be showing the related Project Paw documentary at the Sie FilmCenter on September 25th. Link for more information and ordering tickets.

CompanyWeek: 'Attracting Capital Is Key for Start-Up Bioscience Companies'
Quoting from today's CompanyWeek, column by Colorado BioScience Association President/CEO April Giles:
"Every other year the Colorado Bioscience Association, in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation, brings investors and funding partners to our home turf with the Rocky Mountain Life Science Investor and Partnering Conference (RMLIPC). We work hard to vet 30 fantastic presenting companies and intrigue 50 out of state investors – angel, VC, venture funds and business development arms to strategic partners – to Colorado to look at an undermined, yet highly valuable bioscience community."

"The medical device sector in Metro Denver region has experienced dramatic growth over the past decade, including 16% growth during the years of recession, 2001-2010. This growth followed a report issued in March 2003 by the Governor’s office entitled 'Colorado’s Place in the Sun: A Bioscience Future, An Action plan to Grow Colorado’s Bioscience Cluster.' Metro Denver currently ranks as the sixth largest cluster of medical device companies in the U.S. Over the past five years, the region has seen more growth in device companies than biotech or pharmaceuticals."
