Quoting the Denver Acupuncture - News Feed For Martha Lucas, Ph.D., L.Ac.:
"As a New Year's present I am giving the Cat Care Society in Lakewood a check for $395. CCS is the benefactor of my annual December fundraising campaign.
For a number of years my benefactor was the NICU at Rose Hospital where my premie grandson Jonathan received such excellent care at the beginning of his life. Now I have moved to another group who needs our help, cats who are looking for new permanent homes. The CCS veterinarian clinic is where we just took our cat Annie for her checkup and dental work and it is a place to behold! Wonderful calm cats greet you and your beloved cat when you arrive. We felt that the medical care was outstanding and the staff absolutely loves cats.
Thank you to all of my patients who received treatments in December because you helped the amount grow while you helped your health. And a special thank you to those of you who added a little more to the pot!"
In November, seven students from the home-based French/English kindergarten pre-school, La Petite Ecole, in Aurora raised $25 in change and gave 40 lbs. of litter, a new rubber backed rug, two large boxes of trash bags, two bags of kitten chow, one large bottle of bleach, eight rolls of paper towels, 24 cans of Friskies cat food, and a package of small paper plates to Cat Care Society.
For the cash donation, the class participated in Cat Care Society's 'Hello, My Name Is' name our cats program ($10 per name). They chose Minou (min-oo) and Cha Cha (sha sha), and the next kitties to be admitted to the shelter arrived 12/16/12... and we're named accordingly.
These cuties were adopted the same day they went into the Kitten Room on December 22nd... sending Suellen into immediate action to get their photos taken.
Minou and Cha Cha have a condition known as Cerebellar Hypoplasia which affects their motor control and coordination. They are very wobbly and fall over at times if they move to fast. It is similar to Parkinson's Disease in humans. They can live a normal long happy life just like any other kittens. They love to sit in your lap and they just purr and purr. They batted balls and string toys around during play sessions. When they are tired they curl up together in a bed, it's the cutest thing ever. They will be able to look out for each other and comfort each other.
A big thank you to Ray and Kelsey for opening their hearts and home to these beautiful babies. We wish them all the best and a long healthy life. Special thanks to La Petite Ecole for naming these precious little girls.

"Medical-device manufacturers are fretting about a federal tax on sales that would apply to items sold to hospitals and clinics starting Jan. 1, and which is projected to raise as much as $30 billion a year nationally for health care reform.
The 2.3 percent tax on revenue from device sales will apply to sales in 2013 and beyond, amounting to tens of millions of dollars paid by Colorado companies annually, unless a last-second repeal effort in Congress succeeds...
...The CBSA has continued to back repealing or changing the tax as it’s written.
The Colorado medical-device scene is notable for its startup activity, which the association worries will be limited by the tax, said Leah Lindahl, vice president of the CBSA.
Beyond outright repeal, some opponents of the tax have proposed altering it to exempt startups and smaller companies, or delay when it takes effect."
"The Denver-based Colorado BioScience Association, which represents the state’s bioscience community, is seeking tax-deductible year-end donations for the Colorado Bioscience Institute.
The Institute will provide educational and workforce programs for teachers, students, bioscience professionals and the broader community.
'Each gift will help us reach our goal of $20,000, including a generous matching gift from PhRMA up to $5,000,' said April Giles, CBSA president and CEO.
'The initial $20,000 raised will support the launch of one of the Institute’s flagship programs – the BioGENEius Challenge—in addition to other college and high school educational forums.'
Giles said the program will provide high school students the opportunity to compete and be recognized for outstanding research in biotechnology.
"The Colorado BioScience Association presented its 2012 industry awards at its annual awards dinner celebrating Colorado’s bioscience community.
Recipients of 2012 awards include:
• Lifetime Achievement Award — William Freytag, former chairman and CEO of Myogen Inc. He spent 25 years in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, and now serves on boards of the BioFrontiers Institute, University of Colorado Foundation and the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority."
"Last week, 18 Democratic U.S. Senators sent a letter to Sen. Harry Reid asking for a delay in the medical device tax due to go into effect in 2013, citing the importance of the industry to the U.S. economy. The medical device tax, a 2.3% federal tax on the price of medical devices, is another crippling tax that’s part of Obamacare. When we saw the news, we thought for sure that two of the 18 Senators who signed the letter would be Colorado’s U.S. Senators, Sen. Mark Udall and Sen. Michael Bennet, given the importance of the medical device industry to Colorado’s economy. But, their fingerprints were nowhere to be found on this letter...
...According to April Giles, President and CEO of the Colorado BioScience Association, 'the medical device sector makes up 50% of the [bioscience] industry for Colorado, with employment growth far exceeding the other sectors at 14.5% over the past 4 years.'
Here’s a few stats from the Colorado Bioscience Association:
• The region’s medical device sector, a subsection of the bioscience industry, is the sixth-largest in the nation
• Employment in the industry grew 8.1% from 2005-2010
• Colorado employs 20,000 people in the bioscience industry, creating 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, translating into $7 billion in payroll, at an average salary of $74,000
• For every job created in Colorado’s bioscience industry, four direct and indirect jobs are created
