Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA) is honored to welcome the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Rocky Mountain Regional Satellite Office and Russell Slifer, its new director, to Denver at today’s historic grand opening. The announcement is made by CBSA President and CEO April Giles, who says, “Bioscience companies in Colorado depend on access to a high quality, efficient patent office; and having patent agents right in our back yard will provide for a better interface, as well as efficient and engaged interactions, in the future.”
Director Slifer, an intellectual property lawyer, has served as chief patent counsel for Boise, Idaho-based Micron Technology for the past eight years. He also was a design engineer for Honeywell and spent more than nine years in private legal practice in Minnesota helping high-technology clients.
As background, in September 2011, U.S. Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet worked to pass the America Invents Act, which allowed for the creation of three new satellite offices for the USPTO. This effort in turn led to the establishment of the Denver office, which according to Giles, should make the patent process more effective and affordable for smaller entities in the region; relieve the logjam of patents awaiting approval; and, result in patent litigation being less imposing and more predictable.

Colorado Matters/Beta Test Series: 'Colorado company [AlloSource] recycles bones and skin for transplants'
Quoting from the posting by CPR's Andrea Dukakis, part of their 'Beta Test' series about scientific advancements in the state:
"When you think of organ transplants, hearts, livers and kidneys may come to mind. But bones, tendons, cartilage and skin can also be transplanted from human cadavers. The Colorado nonprofit AlloSource -- one of the only companies of its kind in the country -- gets those body parts, sterilizes them and shapes them to fit individual patients. Once they’re ready, they get sent to hospitals around the nation.
'This is really a gift,' AlloSource CEO Tom Cycyota says. 'The tissue that we’re processing today -- that person was alive yesterday. While we’re gifted with their tissue and trying to do some really cool stuff with it, that family is dealing with the grief of losing a loved one and we never forget about that.'"

Mark Your Calendar July 31-Aug 10: the Amazing Acro-Cats are headed back to Denver and raising funds for Cat Care Society
The Bug Theatre (3654 Navajo St, Denver, CO 80211) welcomes Samantha Martin and her Amazing Acro-Cats as they dive into Denver, again helping raising funds for Cat Care Society. Purr-formances begin July 31st through August 10th, 2014. Adult tickets are $18, children are $15.
Visit: www.circuscats.com or http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/69429
The one-hour show features over a dozen fabulous felines (former orphans, rescues, and strays) walking tightropes, pushing carts, skateboarding, jumping through hoops, ringing bells, balancing on balls and turning on lights. Alley, our newest addition to the troupe, will be sure to delight and amaze you with her energy and ability. But wait there’s more! Tuna, the star of the show, is the leader of the ONLY CAT BAND IN EXISTANCE – the Rock Cats. With Oz on guitar, Dakota on drums, Nue on keyboards, and Sookie on chimes - Tuna (who plays cowbell) and her band really steal the show with their own style of original music. There is even a chicken, Cluck Norris, on cymbal and tambourine!
Samantha Martin, Chief Executive Human (or CEH for short) for the Amazing Acro-Cats, challenges the idea that “cats can’t be trained.” Tuna and the gang are real house cats who have learned all their skills through something called clicker training. The shows include a demonstration of a cat learning some basic tricks using this method that focuses on positive reinforcement only. Although she has studied and worked with many species, today Martin’s primary focus is on cats. Training builds richer and more meaningful relationships between animals and humans and it can save time and lives in emergencies. A lifelong fascination and unique bond with animals motivated Martin to study and earn her degree in animal husbandry and behavioral sciences.
As in past year's when the Acro-Cats came to Denver, a portion of ticket sales will be donated to Cat Care Society based out of Lakewood, CO - http://www.catcaresociety.org!. Martin advocates adoption from these types of organizations. Over the past four years, Martin has also purr-sonally found homes for over 140 cats and kittens and continues to take fosters on the road and help them find their furr-ever homes.

Cats & Co: 'ADOPT-A-CAT: KRISTA' at Cat Care Society
Meet Krista, a cat from Cat Care Society. She came to Cat Care Society in October 2001 when she was only 3,5 weeks old. She was adopted in December 2001. But she changed owners somewhere in 2006. Krista had no issues until the boyfriend of the owner started brining his dog over. She started doing her business outside the litter-box when the dog was there. She was terrified of that dog and was brought back to the Cat Care Society in 2006, she has been there for 7 years already(!)."
