The CBSA had the honor of hosting CSU's Dr. Temple Grandin as the keynote presenter for its 2010 Awards Dinner at the Denver Grand Hyatt - September 29, 2010. Dr. Grandin also received the CBSA's 2010 Chairman's Award (CBSA Board Chair Rick Jory, pictured here thanks to w3w3.com, presents the award to Dr. Grandin).
Dr. Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her achievements are remarkable because she was an autistic child. At age two she had no speech and all the signs of severe autism. Fortunately, her mother defied the advice of the doctors and kept her out of an institution. Many hours of speech therapy, and intensive teaching enabled her to learn speech. As a teenager, life was hard with constant teasing. Mentoring by her high school science teacher and her aunt on her ranch in Arizona motivated her to study and pursue a career as a scientist and livestock equipment designer. Dr. Grandin obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College in 1970. In 1974, she was employed as Livestock Editor for the Arizona Farmer Ranchman and also worked for Corral Industries on equipment design. In 1975, she earned her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University for her work on the behavior of cattle in different squeeze chutes. Dr. Grandin was awarded her Ph.D. in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University.
Most recently the HBO made-for-TV movie of Dr. Grandin's life story won seven Emmy awards. Visit http://www.grandin.com or http://www.templegrandin.com for more information. Link to the CBSA YouTube Channel to view Dr. Grandin's introductory remarks at the 2010 CBSA Awards dinner:

RMI’s strategic focus, sharpened in 2009, weaves together much of their energy work of the past 27 years plus further innovations, and applies their discovery of how integrative design can achieve expanding, not diminishing, returns to investments in advanced energy efficiency. RMI calls this strategic focus “Reinventing Fire” - mapping and driving the profitable transition from oil and coal to efficiency and renewables. This transformational shift can bring an oil-free world, a stabilized climate, nuclear nonproliferation, less poverty, more stability, and durable prosperity. RMI works extensively with the private sector, as well as with civil society and government, to create abundance by design and to apply the framework of natural capitalism. Visit: http://www.rmi.org

The Colorado BioScience Association and 650+ Partners Oppose Amendments 60 and 61 & Proposition 101
The Colorado BioScience Association together with over 650 partners are opposed to three ballot measures facing Colorado this election – Amendment 60, Amendment 61 and Proposition 101. The announcement is made by Holli Baumunk, CBSA President & CEO, who says these three measures - also known as the 'ugly three' - are referred to as tax breaks, but will have a devastating impact on Colorado and the companies located in the state for years to come.
“These three measures are certain to bring long-term harm to the bioscience industry as a whole and push Colorado’s economy further into recession,” Baumunk explains, “Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 create an unprecedented $4.2 billion deficit at the state and local level, displacing 73,000 jobs, terminating over 8,000 classroom teachers and dramatically increasing fees and licenses on small business. This will happen on top of the 110,000 jobs already lost in Colorado in the last 18 months of the recession.”

Guest Commentary: 'Investing in bioscience innovation'
Quoting from the commentary by Kristina M. Lybecker:
"As the national unemployment rate nears 10 percent, job creation and industrial growth are more important than ever. America's continued international competitiveness depends on building on our successes and fostering economic growth. The biopharmaceutical sector is one of those successes. Moreover, it has been one of the few sources of good news during the recession of 2008. While private-sector employment was declining, the biopharmaceutical sector grew by 1.4 percent."

Quoting from the article by Steve Raabe in this morning's Denver Post:
"Colorado must invest hundreds of millions of dollars in coming years to maintain its status as a national leader in clean energy, a new report suggests.
The study from the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association says Colorado has capitalized on its natural energy and intellectual resources but needs to push the growth of startup and relocating renewable-energy companies in the face of competition from other states.
'The question is not do we have the resources but how do we cement and accelerate to capitalize on the resources we have,' said Sandy Butterfield, chief executive of Boulder Wind Power, a startup wind-turbine firm.

Venture Showcase - "Biotech in Colorado: Synthetic Sharkskin and So Much More"
Report by Eric Whitney: "The Colorado BioScience Association holds a competition every other year to find the state's top new biotechnology start-up company. Nominees get the chance to pitch their ideas to a room full of potential investors. That's more important than ever in a down economy, when start-up funding is hard to find."
