"Cleaning up in clean-tech industries"

"The federal stimulus package, with its emphasis on green jobs, is helping to infuse funds and support for the growth. But according to the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association, an industry support group, the clean-tech boom is being powered by the state's mix of innovators, research and entrepreneurs.

The CCIA released a state cleantech action plan in mid-October to provide an industry overview and to identify areas for development and growth. The organization ratcheted up the fanfare by holding the first-ever Cleantech Awards ceremony, where Northern Colorado businesses, um, cleaned up."

Northern Colorado 'Bioscience companies share in federal funding'

Quoting from the Northern Colorado Business Report:

"Four Fort Collins bioscience companies have received nearly a quarter million dollars each for research projects from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

As a whole, the Colorado bioscience industry received over $23 million for 102 different research projects from the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project program. This places the state in the top 10 of those applying for QTDP grants and tax credits. The QTDP program, created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, is designed to provide support to small bioscience firms that show significant potential to produce cost-saving therapies."

DBJ: 'Colorado biotechs, medical firms get $23M in federal health-reform funds'

"Colorado biotech and medical device companies won $23 million in federal government grants and tax credits made available under health care reform legislation.

This week, 59 Colorado companies began receiving notice they qualified for money to help fund 102 projects.

The Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project, overseen by the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is part of the massive health care bill -- known as the Affordable Care Act -- passed by Congress in March.

The QTDP program offers funding to small companies creating medical therapies with the potential to reduce health care costs, create jobs or improve U.S. competitiveness.

The Colorado BioScience Association teamed with law and accounting firms in the bioscience industry to help companies apply in June."

Colorado’s Bioscience Industry Awarded more than $23 Million in Federal Funding - Ranking in Top Ten of all States

Colorado’s bioscience industry received over $23 million for 102 different projects in the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) program, per data posted online Monday by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The announcement is made by Holli Baumunk, President & CEO of the Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA), who is proud to say that Colorado ranks in the top ten of all states applying for credits and grants under the new program.

“The QTDP program was created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 which was enacted in March of this year,” Baumunk explains. “This was a unique program in which $1 billion was allocated for tax credits and grants for start-up companies in the bioscience industry to help encourage innovation, advance technology and help ensure that the U.S. remains competitive in this industry. Colorado has a nationally ranked bioscience cluster with the majority of companies being in the start-up phase. Demonstrating the tremendous entrepreneurial climate in the state, more than 100 projects within Colorado have been funded through this program, bringing in more than $23 million for research activities.”

This new program was designed to provide tax credits and grants to small bioscience firms that show significant potential to produce cost saving therapies, support US jobs and increase US competitiveness.

The Colorado Cleantech Industry Association's recently released Cleantech Action Plan is featured along with major projects in Graz, Austria; CleanTECH SanDiego; Finnish Cleantech Cluster; The Finnish Environmental Cluster for China; The Global Cleantech Cluster Association; Swisscleantech; The CleanTech Center in Syracuse; Peterborough (UK) EnviroCluster; and the EcoClup association. More Video 2010 BioWest/CBSA Awards Dinner - Dr. Temple Grandin, BIO & MDMA

The CBSA had the honor of hosting CSU's Dr. Temple Grandin as the keynote presenter for its 2010 Awards Dinner at the Denver Grand Hyatt - September 29, 2010. Dr. Grandin also received the CBSA's 2010 Chairman's Award (CBSA Board Chair Rick Jory, pictured here thanks to w3w3.com, presents the award to Dr. Grandin).

Dr. Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her achievements are remarkable because she was an autistic child. At age two she had no speech and all the signs of severe autism. Fortunately, her mother defied the advice of the doctors and kept her out of an institution. Many hours of speech therapy, and intensive teaching enabled her to learn speech. As a teenager, life was hard with constant teasing. Mentoring by her high school science teacher and her aunt on her ranch in Arizona motivated her to study and pursue a career as a scientist and livestock equipment designer. Dr. Grandin obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College in 1970. In 1974, she was employed as Livestock Editor for the Arizona Farmer Ranchman and also worked for Corral Industries on equipment design. In 1975, she earned her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University for her work on the behavior of cattle in different squeeze chutes. Dr. Grandin was awarded her Ph.D. in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University.

The Colorado Cleantech Action Plan, released 10/18/10 at a State Capitol news conference, finds Colorado's innovation in the wind, solar, smart grid and bio-derived sectors, combined with the state’s progressive policies, will be the leading driver of industry growth over the next five years. The analysis, commissioned by the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association, was conducted over a five-month period by an independent consulting firm, Navigant Consulting, and involved more than 100 industry stakeholders.
