New Colorado Cleantech Action Plan Identifies Leading Drivers of Industry Growth in the State

The Colorado Cleantech Action Plan, released today at a State Capitol news conference, finds Colorado's innovation in the wind, solar, smart grid and bio-derived sectors, combined with the state’s progressive policies, will be the leading driver of industry growth over the next five years. The analysis, commissioned by the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association (CCIA), was conducted over a five-month period by an independent consulting firm, Navigant Consulting, and involved more than 100 industry stakeholders. Boulder County Business Report: 'Sophono will use grant to expand'

Quoting from the news item:

"Sophono Inc., a Boulder-based hearing-device designer, is expected to use a new $600,000 grant to expand its operations in the United States, the company president said.

The company plans to relocate its manufacturing and assembly operations from Germany to Boulder and to hire six to 10 new employees in the next few months, Jim Kasic, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Sophono got the money from the Colorado Institute for Drug, Device and Diagnostic Development funding group in Aurora."

Business News: "Colorado BioScience Association names industry winners"

"The Colorado BioScience Association announced the winners of its 2010 industry awards presented today at the Grand Hyatt, Denver. Recipients of the 2010 awards are:

- Life Time Achievement Award: Robert Collins. In 1964, Collins and business partner Ran Bellows moved their small southern California business to Lakewood. Their company, COBE Laboratories, manufactured and distributed medical specialty products around the world, and soon became an international player in the medical device sector. Collins directed the development of COBE until its sale to Gambro in 1990. He has remained active in the health care field as a director of Denver Biomedical, Inc. and Eleanor Roosevelt Research Institute.

- Life Time Achievement Award -Robert Anderson. In 1969, Anderson co-founded Valleylab, Inc., and served as CEO and chairman until January 1986. He relinquished his role as CEO in 1986 and continued as chairman until retiring in May of 1996. ValleyLab, which focuses on electrosurgical and ultrasonics systems, was acquired by Pfizer, Inc., in 1983. Anderson was named the first Boulder Entrepreneur of the Year in 1985. In 1999, he received the “Pioneer in Endoscopy” award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal Surgeons, for his early work in “keyhole” surgery. He holds six patents assigned to Medtronic and ValleyLab."

Timothy W. Schultz, President and Executive Director of the Boettcher Foundation, introduced the new Webb Waring Biomedical Research program and the 2010 Boettcher Investigators to the Colorado Bioscience Community at the Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA) Awards Dinner held September 29th during the 8th annual BioWest Conference & Expo.

Business-Briefs: "2 Metro firms win medical startup funds"

"Two state companies were selected to receive a total of $900,000 in startup funding from the Colorado Institute for Drug, Device and Diagnostic Development (CID4), the institute said Monday.

Boulder-based Sophono Inc. will receive $600,000 for its Alpha 1 Magnetic Bone Anchored Hearing System. The company says the system is the first if its kind and is designed to treat conductive and mixed hearing loss and single- sided deafness.

Aurora-based PeptiVir Inc. will receive $300,000 for its universal flu vaccine under development. The grants are the first made by CID4, which is funded by $3.75 million from the state and $1 million from the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority."
