Cat Care Society: Remembering Linda James Goto
For the past three years, local animal lover and philanthropist Linda James Goto helped initiate and nurture to success the Cat Care Society fundraiser, Tails of the Painted Cats. She had served as a distinguished art juror for the project since its inception -- sharing her depth and breadth of knowledge and experience as the long-time coordinator of 'The Mask Project' for The Denver Hospice.
For that, the Cat Care Society is forever deeply grateful and, of course, saddened to learn of her unexpected passing this past week. Linda is pictured above bidding at the 2011 Tails of the Painted Cats Gala Dinner and Auction (Photo by Maggie Holben).

NIH Funding: 'If the money stops, so does the science'
Quoting from LifeScience Aurora in the Aurora Sentinel earlier this year:
"National Institutes of Health grants have long been vital for scientific research at Colorado universities and to the startup companies the research spawns. The federal research giant doles out more than $30 billion each year, much of it in research grants...
...At the Colorado BioScience Association, executive vice president April Giles said officials have been lobbying Colorado’s congressional delegation hard in recent weeks to find a way to save NIH from the funding axe.
Possible cuts are particularly worrisome for the bioscience companies, she said, because they could come at a time when states are scaling back funding for colleges and universities where a lot of the research that spawns bioscience businesses is happening.
The grants are vital to startups, Giles said, because they allow a company to prove that their idea is scientifically viable. From there, researchers can look for other investors in the private and public sector, but NIH is often the first significant funding source that allows a business to get started.
'NIH is the start of it all. Nothing happens initially without NIH investment,' she said."

November: Adopt a Senior Cat and Name Your Price!
November: Adopt a Senior Cat and Name Your Price!
By Mary Blake, Cat Care Society Volunteer - (that's Cat Care Society's Senior Kitty Moekie in the photo)
If you’re looking for a sweet, warm, mellow kitty, there’s one waiting for you at Cat Care Society where you can name your price!
That’s right -- November is Adopt-a-Senior Pet Month, so this is the time to bring home a calm, laid-back, loving kitty who just wants to snuggle in your lap -- at a price you choose. Kittens are cute, but they can be exhausting. Senior cats are not as demanding.
They are less likely to climb the curtains or holiday tree or chew on your prized possessions. Older cats will give you years of unconditional love and you can give them the best years of their life.
If medical costs are a concern, don’t worry! If you adopt a cat 10 years or older from Cat Care Society, you are eligible for our Perpet-U-Care program, which provides up to $250 worth of annual veterinary care at our clinic to offset medical costs. It’s a great deal for you and for your new kitty!
Cat Care Society is the only Denver metro area shelter to offer this level of care. Wouldn’t you love a mellow, warm kitty cuddling next to you on these cold winter nights? For more information, please contact Abbi Collins, Adoption Manager, or any of our adoption specialists at (303) 239-9680 or visit http://www.catcaresociety.org/adoption_cats.html (look for "Senior" in the age column).

Today's Mail: 'I just wanted to write to say how much I love CCS!'
From Christina in Breckenridge:
"I am sitting at home working and my beautiful fluffy gray male cat (Bernie) adopted from CCS has just joined me. When I first adopted him almost 3 years ago he was aloof and preferred solitude. Over time I have watched him become comfortable and happy in his surroundings. He is so loving to all: he grooms our female cat and he loves when my young nephew visits, coming out of the bedroom to greet him and play. Every day I tell him how much he is loved and that we are so blessed to have him.
Thank you to everyone at CCS for taking him in and giving him a second chance. I see the happiness on his face each day."

"Our search committee worked very hard to find the best qualified person to lead the CBSA into its next phase of growth. In testament to April's tremendous talent and extensive experience in the association management and bioscience industry, we learned the best person for the job was already part of the CBSA leadership team," Orndorff explains.

Colorado Springs: 'Spectranetics profit surges to five-year high'
Quoting from the October 30 Gazette article by Wayne Heilman:
"Spectranetics Corp. reported its highest quarterly profit in more than five years Tuesday on record revenue during the third quarter and raised its sales forecast for the second consecutive quarter.
The Colorado Springs-based medical laser manufacturer boosted earnings by nearly nine times during the July-to-September quarter to $905,000, or 3 cents a share, from $109,000, or 0 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 10 percent during the same period to $35.2 million with strong growth in the use of the company's lasers to remove infected pacemaker leads and clear blockages in leg arteries...
...The gains prompted Spectranetics management to boost its revenue for the year to between $138.5 million and $139.5 million from between $137 million and $139.5 million. The forecast represents a 9 percent to 10 percent gain from last year's sales number.
However, Guy Childs, the company's chief financial officer, repeated a warning he issued in April that a new 2.3 percent excise tax on all medical device sales would wipe out most of the company's profits next year. The tax is part of the landmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He repeated the warning, originally made during a panel discussion hosted by the Colorado Bioscience Association, during a conference call with stock analysts."
