News from Cat Care Society recently adopted kitties:

Crash and Coltrane (pictured snuggling) - are now “Cash and Cole”. They are very loving, happy and friendly and like to sleep together in their bed on top of their owner’s bed. They like wand toys with feathers and the laser light. Both cats loved to be brushed for hours and Cash growls at the vacuum.

Whiskers - is now “Echo” and is completely comfortable in his home and is best buds with owner’s 7 year old son. He likes to carry his glitter balls in his mouth and likes the 13 year old female cat and the two dogs he shares his home with.

Lilly - loves to sit at the bay window and rubs against her two female owners when they’re at the computer. They claim she is a “great cat!”

DBJ: 'FDA could be source of innovation, Hamburg says'

Quoting from the September 11th posting by Greg Avery:

"Hamburg’s vision is for the FDA to use that position to help researchers and companies make more effective new treatments and prove new medical advances more quickly, she said.

'We have a lot more to offer than has historically been appreciated,' said Hamburg, U.S. Commissioner of Food and Drugs since 2009. 'The regulator has a very different role than the innovator or the academic researcher, but we can be a very effective partner for both.'

It’s a theme Hamburg is stressing as U.S. Rep. Dianna DeGette, a Democrat representing Denver, and U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R- Michigan, spearhead a bipartisan '21st Century Cures' initiative in Congress aimed at creating legislation to spur innovation and efficiency in medicine and health care. That could involve changes to FDA rules and budget.

Hamburg gave the closing keynote speech Wednesday at the Colorado BioScience Association’s annual BioWest convention. She had testified before DeGette and Upton in Washington D.C. earlier that same day."

DP Business: 'Colorado biotech firms trying to innovate efficiently'

Quoting the September 11th overview by Aldo Svaldi:

"Efficiency and cost savings were themes repeated often at the annual conference of the Colorado BioScience Association.

Once upon a time, it was enough for biotech firms to show how innovative their latest offerings were, even if they weren't fully proven and they cost more than whatever they were replacing.

After the passage of the Affordable Care Act, proof something works matters more than its whiz bang. And anything new needs to cut costs rather than inflate them.

'It needs to be a better and less-expensive solution,' said Bill Aldrich, CEO of EndoShape, a Boulder start-up that is developing polymer plugs and coils designed to replace more expensive platinum products now in use in blood vessels."

BioWest 2014: 'Biannual conference and expo highlights life science industry progress, challenges'

Quoting from the Sept 11 InnovatioNews:

"If the nation’s health care system can be shaken up and transformed into a more proactive force, it could help companies improve their bottom lines through healthier employees.

That was one of the messages Wednesday from a panel of health care experts kicking off BioWest 2014, the biannual conference and life science industry expo hosted by the Colorado BioScience Association...

...Lunch keynote speaker Russell Slifer, director of the newly-opened Rocky Mountain office of the U.S Patent and Trademark Office in Denver, said the office is hiring patent examiners and judges and expects to have more than 100 examiners and 20 judges in place within the year...

...Winner of the $7,500 Venture Showcase pitch competition was dBMedx, a Littleton company that makes non-invasive scanning technology...

...The BioWest conference also included a closing keynote by Margaret Hamburg, U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner."

Colorado Med Device Company dBMEDx Wins the Venture Showcase Competition at BioWest 2014

dBMEDx (Littleton) won the 2014 Venture Showcase competition at the BioWest Conference and Expo yesterday at the Marriott City Center Denver, receiving the $7,500 cash prize. The announcement is made by April Giles, Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA) President and CEO who says, “We are very proud to announce dBMEDx as the winner of the Venture Showcase. The check presentation was an exciting end to the BioWest Conference. The award not only includes the cash prize of $7,500 but also includes recognition and exposure for the company. ” This award is sponsored by Dorsey and Whitney LLP and The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation. BioWest, the Rocky Mountain Region's premier medical device and biotechnology conference, is organized by the CBSA and held every other year.

dBMEDx is a Colorado-based medical device development company that is creating clinical decision and patient monitoring devices using its patented, non-invasive scanning technology. These devices combine the power and safety of ultrasound with sophisticated image processing electronics and software to provide simple, fully automated and completely noninvasive diagnostic measurements.  Fully automated means that very little training is required and the user does not need any experience with ultrasound to use our devices. To enable this level of automation, dBMEDx has successfully created and patented an extremely compact, wireless, 3D scan engine.

The scan engine, which can be held in the palm of the hand, includes a complete 3D ultrasound imaging machine and automated image processor within a small, sealed tube.  The system also includes an integrated Bluetooth radio and rechargeable battery, which is inductively charged. The company is in the process of commercializing the first application for this technology, the BBS Revolution™ device for automated bladder volume measurement, and has a range of pipeline of products for other clinical applications as well. It's #MiceBucketChallenge for Cat Care Society on Facebook

It's #MiceBucketChallenge for Cat Care Society on Facebook.

Particulars: Load up a bucket with your soft mice toys, make a video of your cat taking the challenge by ever so gently dumping them on your cat (similar to the recent #IceBucketChallenge for ALS), challenge other kitties to do the same and, most important, make a donation to Cat Care Society in Lakewood, Colorado. We're suggesting a minimum $10 donation for each challenge. You can donate online at ColoradoGives.org - here's the link: https://www.coloradogives.org/index.php?section=organizations&action=newDonation&fwID=28010 - or you can mail or drop a check by the shelter during business hours: 5787 W. 6th Ave., Lakewood, CO 80214. Remember to make sure you let us know your donation is for #MiceBucketChallenge. If you don't Facebook (or make videos), please still consider donating to help the shelter cats in Lakewood by participating in the Cat Care Society #MiceBucketChallenge. Thank you!

ColoradoBiz: 'Anschutz Medical Campus takes shape as a veritable city of health sciences'

Quoting from the September issue:

"Seven years after the former Fitzsimons Army post was redeveloped as a hub for health care, education and research, the campus is doing exactly what it was created to do: breeding companies based on research developed at the hospitals and school on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus...

...'Last year we added nine companies,' said Steve VanNurden, president and chief executive of the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority (FRA), which oversees the Science + Technology Park. 'A lot of the companies come from the university. It’s great to see new intellectual property is coming right across the street.'

In 2012, the FRA recruited VanNurden from Mayo Clinic Ventures, the invention arm for the Minnesota-based medical group, a testament to increased attention the medical research community is paying to the Anschutz campus..."

...The FRA is re-evaluating the decade-old master plan that envisioned recruiting major bioscience companies that would build their own facilities. Now it’s focused on aligning itself with research institutions such as the University of Colorado.

'The need for the Pfizers of the world to build facilities has diminished as they’ve put more focus on research institutions,' said John Shaw, an independent consultant the FRA hired to oversee its real estate projects in the district. 'There are 150 acres of property to be developed. That allows us to look at a number of other uses to support the hospitals and research centers. We’re looking at what we can place in the property that will enhance what is currently there.'

Those uses could include student housing and a hotel, in addition to laboratory and office space for emerging companies."
