CBSA Commends the State of Colorado For Granting $3.135 Million To Advance Bioscience Research from Bench to Marketplace

Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA) commends the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) for awarding $3.135 Million in Commercialization Infrastructure grants under the Bioscience Discovery Evaluation Grant Program (BDEGP) last week. April Giles, CBSA President and CEO, says "CBSA appreciates the OEDIT for its ongoing commitment to the state’s bioscience industry through the Bioscience Discovery Evaluation Grant Program, which was created in 2006 by the Colorado General Assembly. These key commercialization infrastructure grants funded last week are critical to advancing bioscience research from the bench into the marketplace."

Commercial Infrastructure grantees announced by the OEDIT include:

* The Colorado Institute for Drug, Device and Diagnostic Development (CID4): $1,350,000
CID4 is managing life science discoveries from Colorado research institutions and Colorado start-ups and early-stage businesses with the goal of creating bioscience jobs in Colorado. Grant funds support operations and the development and management of life-science discoveries. The CID4 has seven early-stage companies under its guidance supporting their operational development and attracting additional investment to meet their needs. Visit: http://cid4.com

* Colorado Center for Drug Discovery (C2D2): $750,000
Based at Colorado State University, C2D2 is a resource to faculty at Colorado research universities, bringing biology and chemistry faculty together to use chemical libraries, computational resources, bioinformatics, cheminformatics, database support, virtual high throughput screening, and Computer Aided Drug Design to pharmacologically validate drug candidates with patent-protected chemical matter and innovative therapeutics for unmet medical needs. C2D2 supports several inter-institutional projects with funding and resources. Further, C2D2 offers compounds to investigators through its screening library and medicinal chemistry services that are critical in the drug discovery process. Visit: http://c2d2.org

* The Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado: $410,248
The University of Colorado Skagg's School of Pharmacy at Anschutz developed an HTS/HCS (high throughput/content screening) Core Facility for drug discovery. Grant funds support equipment, resources and personnel costs to develop the core facilities of the institute. With grant support, the institute has developed one of the largest repositories of shRNAs in the world at the Functional Genomics Facility. Colorado companies partner with the institute to improve their products. Ventria, a Fort Collins based pharma-biologics company, has used mass spectrometry services to detect oxidation in recombinant protein samples manufactures for human terapeutics. OPX Biotechnologies based in Boulder utilizes mass spectrometry to detect levels of intracellular metabolytes in biofuel molecule samples. Longmont-based Avery Brewing Co. has partnered with the Next-Generation DNA Sequencing Facility to develop an early-detection test for yeast cross-contamination to reduce waste and inefficiencies in their production process. Handsome Murphy Celebrates 'Back In Black' Month On 9News Petline9

Cat Care Society Volunteer Kay Higgins escorted handsome 6-year-old Murphy to 9News Petline9 this morning with Meteorologist Becky Ditchfield. Murphy, a black domestic shorthair, came to Cat Care Society in early October just in time to celebrate 'Back in Black' in November at the shelter. #BIB is a national program of the Best Friends Animal Society and CCS became a network partner of the Best Friends organization earlier this year.

For the month of November, all CCS black cats are part of the "Name Your Price" adoption special. Murphy is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and tests negative for Fiv / FeLV. He is a large boy (17 lbs) and loves constant attention. He is a head butter and loves his head rubbed. Plus, he needs a lot of play to start losing some weight, but right now he just wants love.

This cutie has been traveling all month to promote his buddies at CAT CARE SOCIETY who are also looking for homes. He has a lot to say in the car on the way to Community Shares off-site expos, but has been very comfortable in every situation presented. Last week he saw a small yippie dog while visiting an Air Force base and simply retreated to a corner.

Murphy would like to be the star in his new indoor forever home. Please come in soon to meet Murphy and all his lucky black cat buddies at Cat Care Society.

November 1-30: Cat Care Society Joins Forces with Best Friends for National 'Back In Black' Adoption Event

Earlier this year, Cat Care Society was accepted as a Best Friends 'No More Homeless Pets' network partner and for the first time is participating in Best Friends' national 'Back In Black' adoption event, held annually in November.

Adoption special: all Cat Care Society black cats will be "Name Your Price" for the month of November.

Quoting from the Back in Black backgrounder: "Although they’re every bit as adorable and sweet as other animals, pets in black often wait longer for homes than their lighter-colored pals. So Best Friends created the Back in Black campaign to shine a spotlight on these often-overlooked pets and help them find good homes."

Most recently, researchers at Colorado State University, led by Dr. Lori Kogan, examined color-coded adoption data, and verified a long-held belief that cats with black coats stay longer in shelters.

More Happy Cats: October Forever Home Updates from Cat Care Society

Bailey - is your typical lap cat and likes to follow his owner around to see what he is up to and loves to play with shiny objects like a toddler.

Boss - definitely lives up to his name. He jumped out of the carrier the first day and took over the house. This sounds like a dictatorship not a democracy. Boss and his owner are very bonded. He will listen for the garage door to open up and knows when his owner arrives and likes to ride on his owner’s shoulders. This cat is the real master of his domain.

Chewy - goes by “Jerome” and likes to be approached slowly for pets. He is a little bit timid but is coming around.

Teva - Her new name is Hel (pronounced heel) which comes from a Norse god who rules the underworld realm. After exploring the whole house in thirty minutes she made herself comfortable. She enjoys chasing fast moving objects, shoe laces, and posters. She dreams of being a feline pin up.

Joki - goes by Smokey. He hid for a couple days then came out and was found sitting on the back of the couch. He likes gentle contact and stroking along his face and then finally worked his way up to his owner’s lap for more affection. His toy collection includes furry mice and a teaser for active play.

Many thanks to Karlyn Mendez, CCS Adoption Desk, for the great news!
